Use the Power of Oatmeal to Enhance Your Beauty Routine

Oatmeal can do more than make for a hearty morning meal. It can also serve as a star ingredient in cosmetics and other personal care products.

Most often, you’ll see products that list colloidal oatmeal as an ingredient. This means the oats have been ground into a fine powder and boiled. The resulting oatmeal contains a variety of moisturizing and cleansing ingredients, including lipids, proteins, and vitamins.

These small but mighty grains can add an all-natural boost to your beauty routine—especially if you have sensitive skin. For example, oatmeal can:

  • Clean without soap. Sprinkle oatmeal in the bathtub directly under warm, running water. Soak your body for 15 to 20 minutes. The oats gently soothe and clean sensitive skin—no separate bar or body wash required.

  • Soothe dry skin. Look for lotions that contain oatmeal as an ingredient. The starches oatmeal contains, along with compounds called beta-glucans, make these creams perfect for hydrating and protecting your epidermis.

  • Shine up your strands. Saponins are the soap-like structures in oatmeal that are predominantly responsible for the grain’s cleansing properties. When included in shampoos, colloidal oatmeal can buff, clean, and soothe hair.

  • Stop an itch. Oats contain compounds called phenols that fight cell damage and inflammation. Oatmeal baths can relieve irritation from poison ivy and other skin rashes. Even people with more severe skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, may find relief from colloidal oatmeal products.

Talk with your health care provider if you have a skin rash that doesn’t go away, affects your face, or covers much of your body. You may need a stronger treatment.
